Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Zoltra Africa
Getting Started
Yes, if you're flying commercially or if your drone weighs more than 250g, you need a Remote Pilot License (RPL) from KCAA. Recreational flying of drones under 250g may not require a license, but you must still follow all aviation regulations.
The complete process typically takes 4-8 weeks, including training (4 weeks), KCAA examination, and license processing. Zoltra helps streamline the application process.
Training costs range from KES 85,000 to KES 250,000 depending on the program. KCAA license fees are KES 5,000, and drone registration is KES 3,000 annually.
No. You must avoid no-fly zones including airports (5km radius), military bases, government buildings, and national parks without permission. Always check local regulations and obtain necessary approvals.
Training & Certification
Training includes aviation regulations, meteorology, drone operations, flight planning, emergency procedures, and practical flight training. You'll complete both simulator and real-world flight sessions.
No prior experience is required. Our training programs are designed for complete beginners and will take you from zero to certified pilot.
You can retake the exam after additional study. Most training programs include exam preparation and support for retakes.
The KCAA RPL is recognized within Kenya. For international operations, you may need additional certifications depending on the country.

Compliance & Legal
ZoltraVerify™ is our license verification system. For KES 20, anyone can instantly verify a pilot's license, drone registration, or flight approval status.
RPL licenses are valid for 2 years. Drone registrations must be renewed annually. Zoltra sends automatic reminders before expiry.
Flying commercially without proper licensing can result in fines up to KES 500,000 and/or imprisonment. Always ensure you're compliant before operating.
For routine operations in unrestricted areas, your RPL and registered drone are sufficient. Special operations (night flying, BVLOS, restricted areas) require additional KCAA approval.
